Description

1901 Five Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Exceptionally Well-Produced

1901 $5 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. An exquisitely struck Gem that possesses radiant devices and deeply mirrored fields. Small breaks in the frost and the cheek and the lower half of LIBERTY prevent an Ultra Cameo designation, but the frost is otherwise seamless. This piece is well-made and well-preserved; a tiny planchet flaw (as produced) in the field near the bust tip must suffice as a pedigree marker. The date and obverse stars are lightly strike doubled. Although the Guide Book reports that 140 proofs were struck, it is clear that not all of them have survived since NGC has encapsulated only 44 pieces, and it is likely that at least several are resubmissions. Population: 1 in 65 Cameo, 0 finer (9/12).(Registry values: P1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28D7, PCGS# 88496, GSID# 9288)

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
Weight: 8.36 grams
AGW: 0.24188oz
