    Description

    1902 Half Eagle, PR65 Cameo
    Ex: Trompeter

1902 $5 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The Mint switched to an all-brilliant finish for proof coins in 1902, drastically reducing the cameo contrast that collectors prized in earlier years. While this impressive Gem does not exhibit as much contrast as many of the coins in this collection, enough frosty texture remains on the devices to create a noticeable cameo effect with the deeply mirrored fields. A small number of 1902 proofs, the coins struck at the beginning of the production run, show such contrast. The well-preserved lemon-yellow surfaces display a couple of minute planchet flaws, one below the edge of 0, and another near the upper curve of 2 in the date. The date is positioned left of center and some die polish shows between the arrow heads on the reverse. Eye appeal is outstanding.

A relatively generous mintage of 162 proof Liberty half eagles was accomplished in 1902, and probably less than half that number survive today in all grades. Population: 2 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (9/15).
