Description

1903 Half Eagle, Deeply Mirrored PR65
    First Generation Holder

1903 $5 PR65 PCGS. CAC. In 1903, the Mint made no effort to produce a cameo effect on its proof coinage, with the result that most examples are fully brilliant. The proof half eagle of this year had a mintage of 154 pieces, one of the more substantial production totals of the period, but the issue survives in significantly lower numbers, likely fewer than half of the original mintage. The certified population figures, totaling some 114 pieces, are no doubt inflated by resubmissions. This piece, housed in a first generation holder, exhibits remarkably deep mirroring in the fields, with somewhat satiny luster seen over the devices. The strike is bold, as expected, and grade-limiting hairlines are nearly nonexistent. A small, coppery alloy spot is noted in the field near the back of Liberty's neck. Population: 4 in 65, 1 finer (8/14).
