    Description

Superb Gem Cameo Proof 1903 Half Eagle
    Among the Finest Survivors

1903 $5 PR67 Cameo NGC. While the so-called "brilliant era" of proof coinage began in 1902, it did not mean the elimination of all contrast from proof coinage, particularly on gold pieces. For several proof Liberty half eagle issues struck in 1902 and later, the number of Cameo examples in the NGC Census Report is higher than the sum of non-Cameo pieces, and even in cases where this is not true, such as for the 1903, the figures usually are comparable; as of (3/12), NGC has certified 40 non-Cameo examples, versus 24 Cameo and one Ultra Cameo coin. As always with small-population issues, these figures include a number of resubmissions.
That resubmission status may extend to the trio of PR68 examples nominally at the top of the NGC Census Report, one in each contrast category. Superb Gems, too, are challenging; only eight appear in the combined certified population, all Cameo. One comes from PCGS, two are NGC PR67+ Cameo, and the other five, including this specimen, are PR67 Cameo without Plus designation (3/12).
Though the traditional 19th century frost is not present on this 1903 half eagle, it still has strong contrast between textures. Gleaming fields are pale yellow-gold, while the devices are crisply detailed with just enough frost for a Cameo designation. The two sides are largely unclouded and magnificently preserved, and this specimen's elite status is as clear as the reflectivity of its mirrors.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 28D9, PCGS# 88498)
