Description

    Surprising 1903 Proof Half Eagle

1903 PR 64 PCGS. A glittering near-gem proof, with deeply mirrored fields and devices that alternate between frosting and reflectivity. Only 154 proof half eagles were struck in 1903 and we estimate that today somewhere between 55 and 70 pieces survive. This is a spectacular proof. In theory, it was struck in the no-contrast style used by the mint in the early years of this century, but much of Liberty is lightly frosted. The background of her diadem is mirrored, while LIBERTY itself is lightly frosted. There is an area near Liberty's eye that is mirrored, the cheek, neck, and hair are again lightly frosted. The eagle is lightly frosted, with brilliance between the lines and some feathers, producing a spectacular effect. A few wispy hairlines can be discerned after very close examination, but the only visual oddity is a bit of light toning across the eagle's upper beak and into the field; despite a slightly reddish cast, it doesn't look like typical copper staining. An exceptionally intense and vibrant coin. Only three coins have been certified finer (11/96). (NGC ID# 28D9, PCGS# 8498)
