Description

Outstanding 1904 Five Dollar, PR64 Cameo

1904 $5 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Only 50 to 75 examples of the 136-piece mintage of the 1904 proof five dollar are thought to have survived. This estimate is more or less in line with the certified population, as PCGS and NGC have seen fewer than 60 specimens. As indicated in the 2006 treatise on U.S. gold coins by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, most of the coins seen are deeply mirrored, and lack the frosted devices seen on most of the examples struck before 1902.
The near-Gem Cameo offered in the present lot displays a noticeable gold-on-black appearance, and a powerful strike reveals itself in excellent delineation on all of the design elements, further enhancing the stunning Cameo contrast. Both sides assume a lovely yellow-gold color. Three tiny marks between stars 11 and 12 are mentioned solely for the purpose as pedigree identifiers. All in all, a simply outstanding Cameo. Population: 15 in 64, 3 finer (10/06).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 28DA, PCGS# 88499)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
