Rare PR65 Cameo 1904 Five Dollar
    One Cameo Finer at PCGS

1904 $5 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth in Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins estimate that only 50 to 75 proof 1904 half eagles survive from the original mintage of 136 pieces. Other experts agree, including Breen, who considered this date a "sleeper." Without question, this is a rare proof issue in any grade, but at the Gem proof level the issue is prohibitively rare. PCGS has certified a mere three examples at the PR65 Cameo level with just one coin grading higher, a PR66 Cameo (11/11). A review of memorable collections reiterates the rarity of the issue in Gem or better condition. The Smithsonian 1904 proof five is considered a PR64 Cameo by specialists, as is the Eliasberg coin. Of the handful of Gem or better examples of this date, most are pedigreed to famous collections, such as the Pittman and Bass estates. The present example boasts near-pristine black-on-gold surfaces with a high degree of contrast. The reverse is essentially free of distractions and is choice for the assigned grade, while the obverse shows a couple of trivial, dotlike contact points in the fields. The small projection at Liberty's throat is a strike-through, as made.
