Description

1904 Half Eagle, PR65
Tied for Finest Non-Cameo at PCGS

1904 $5 PR65 PCGS. Proof Liberty half eagle production began a gradual decline in 1904, with only 136 pieces struck. Fewer than 75 pieces are believed to survive, and "most of the coins known grade PR64 at best," per Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, an assessment with which the certified population reports agree, even taking into account a likely number of resubmissions. The present Gem example is one of just three non-Cameo coins for the grade at PCGS, with none numerically finer. Fully struck design elements deliver modest field-motif contrast on each side, amid deep mirrors and warm honey-gold and rose hues. There are no mentionable contact marks, and any grade-limiting hairlines are undetectable without magnification.(Registry values: P1)
