Description

Cameo Select Proof 1905 Half Eagle From The John Pittman Collection

1905 $5 PR63 Cameo PCGS. Ex: Pittman. The 5 in the date is recut at the peak, and the field is unfinished within the shield, both diagnostics for proofs according to Breen. A cluster of die polish lines beneath the eye are of mint origin. Glassy fields have beautiful deep orange color at the borders, and the radiant devices confirm the Cameo designation. Exquisitely struck, and gorgeous when evaluated with the naked eye. Faint vertical hairlines in the left obverse field appear upon close scrutiny beneath a loupe; these determine the grade. Population: 3 in 63, 3 finer (11/05).
Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection, Part One (Akers, 10/97), which realized $6,600; Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/02), lot 7061, which realized $7,188. Pittman purchased the piece from Abner Kreisberg in 1961 for $225.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 3YDP, PCGS# 88500)
