    Description

Rare 1905 Proof Half Eagle, Elusive Cameo Designation

1905 $5 PR64 Cameo NGC. Repunching on the top of the 5 in the date distinguishes survivors of the similarly dated, 108-piece proof delivery from extant business strike 1905 Half Eagles. There is an uncommon (for a proof gold coin from this era) degree of cameo contrast on both sides of this coin. The otherwise bright, yellow-gold color yields to coal-black in the fields as the surfaces turn away from the light. As befits a specimen striking, the devices are fully brought up in all areas, and the rims are sharp and squared off. Both sides are well preserved with a lone distraction in the right reverse field above the uppermost arrowhead that is mentioned more for pedigree purposes than as a distraction to the unaided eye. Worthy of a strong bid. (NGC ID# 3YDP, PCGS# 88500)
