Description

1905 Five Dollar Liberty, PR64 Cameo
Only 60 to 75 Pieces Believed Extant

1905 $5 PR64 Cameo PCGS. JD-1, R.5. Just 12 pieces have been designated as Cameo proofs out of 48 total examples certified by PCGS. None have been given the Deep Cameo designation. John Dannreuther estimates only 60 to 75 individual proofs are extant out of the original mintage of 108 proofs. This piece appears to be typical of most proof 1905 half eagles, with Garrett and Guth reporting an average grade of 64.4 among coins they have tracked in various auctions. The brilliant yellow-gold surfaces show a hint of green color on both sides. The fields are deeply mirrored and the devices are slightly reflective with just enough luster remaining to be assigned the Cameo descriptor. A few tiny abrasions prevent calling this coin a Gem. Population: 2 in 64 Cameo, 7 finer (11/21).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 3577.
