Description

Deeply Mirrored 1905 Half Eagle, PR65 Cameo

1905 $5 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The proof mintage of the 1905 half eagle was a moderate 108 pieces, surprisingly low for a series that saw a proof production more than twice that amount five years previously, in 1900. Today this Gem Cameo proof is tied for the finest certified at PCGS with one other PR65 Cameo, although that service has also graded six PR65 non-Cameo specimens. There are no Deep Cameos of the issue at PCGS. The surfaces on this piece display thick mint frost on the devices, with profoundly mirrored fields that yield the desired gold-on-black effect. A few lines on the slab, just under Liberty's eye, should not be mistaken for contact on the coin. In fact, there are no mentionable signs of contact on either side, and the proof strike is as full as can be desired. Population: 2 in 65 Cameo, 0 finer (8/10).(Registry values: P1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28DB, PCGS# 88500, Greysheet# 9300)

Weight: 8.36 grams
