Description

1905 Five Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Beautifully Preserved Proof Type Coin

1905 $5 PR66 Cameo NGC. CAC. JD-1, R.5. The Mint struck 108 proof half eagles in 1905. In his authoritative reference, United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold, John Dannreuther estimates that only 60 to 75 pieces survive. PCGS is much for generous with a 75 to 100-coin estimate. PCGS and NGC combined list 85 pieces in all grades, although that figure undoubtedly includes numerous duplications. Regardless of the exact number of pieces extant, the 1905 proof is inherently rare with any degree of cameo contrast. This Premium Gem is among the top six Cameos reported by the grading services, and it is the only PR66 Cameo with CAC endorsement (10/21). Rich yellow-gold and peach-orange surfaces yield beautifully deep mirroring in the fields, with satiny luster on the devices. There are no contact marks, and even hairlines in the fields are virtually nonexistent. Census: 2 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 66, 1 finer (9/21).(Registry values: P1)
