1905 Liberty Half Eagle, PR66 Cameo
Only One Finer Coin at NGC
    Ex: Trompeter

1905 $5 PR66 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. A nominal mintage of 108 proof Liberty half eagles was accomplished in 1905, and some coins were never distributed and returned to the melting pot after the close of the year. As a result, the issue is very scarce-to-rare in all proof grades today. Walter Breen noted that many survivors are in impaired condition and several examples are impounded in institutional collections. NGC and PCGS have combined to certify a total of 80 specimens between them, but that figure is definitely inflated by resubmissions and crossovers (5/15). In the John Jay Pittman Collection, Part I (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 1086, the cataloger remarked:

"Rare, only 40-50 Proof 1905 Half Eagles are estimated to exist, fewer than of any date from 1900-1907 except 1902."

This impressive Premium Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements, with a recut 5 in the date. Some of the vertical stripes in the shield are attenuated at the bottom, due to die polishing. The devices show enough mint frost to create noticeable cameo contrast when the coin is tilted in the light. This cameo effect is seldom seen on proof coins of this era because of the all-brilliant finish the Mint employed, beginning in 1902. No 1905 proof half eagles have been certified with Deep or Ultra Cameo surfaces at either of the leading grading services (5/15). The impeccably preserved yellow-gold surfaces show a few hints of green and the deeply mirrored fields are free of mentionable distractions. Eye appeal is terrific. Census: 3 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer (5/15).
