Description
1907 Half Eagle, PR65 Cameo
Final Year of Issue in Proof
1907 $5 JD-1, Low R.5, PR65 Cameo PCGS. Light yellow-gold
devices are overlayed on pristine mirrored surfaces. All details
are well-defined. The 1907 half eagle is the last known proof
Liberty Head half eagle, and as such, the last brilliant proof half
eagle made at the U.S. Mint. However, in his famous 1914 ANS
exhibit, gold coin collector William Woodin claimed to have
displayed a proof 1908 Liberty Head half eagle. Despite this, there
is no evidence the coin exists. It was not present in the 1911 sale
of Woodin's collection by Thomas Elder, nor was it represented in
the collections of Waldo Newcomer, Virgil Brand, Col. E.H.R. Green,
or other collectors, who purchased Woodin's gold coins either from
his sale or subsequently. Therefore, it must be concluded that the
1907 proof half eagle was the last of its type, and thus a
requirement for collectors putting together a "last year" set. From The Mark George Collection.
