Historic 1907 Liberty Head Five Dollar
    PR64, Last of a Long-Running Era

1907 $5 PR64 PCGS. Ex: HW Bass Jr Collection. The 1907 Liberty Head five dollar marks the passing of a long and historic coinage era. The Liberty Head design of Christian Gobrecht was introduced on the eagle in 1838, the half eagle in 1839, and the quarter eagle in 1840, a staggered debut reflecting the relative importance of those, the three standard gold coinage denominations of the era, in international banking. The designs ran through the lifetimes of many Americans in the 19th-early 20th centuries, ending in 1907 (1908 for the half eagle, although no proofs were struck of the 1908 Liberty Head design). After Gobrecht's death in 1844, James B. Longacre was appointed chief engraver, developing a different design, also called Liberty Head, for the double eagle denomination that debuted in 1849-50.
This last-year proof Liberty Head five should have special appeal for type collectors, who often prefer first- or last-year productions for their sets. The slightly contrasted gold-on-black surfaces approach a Cameo designation, and only some minor thin contact marks appear to preclude an even finer grade. Quite appealing, and fully struck throughout. Population: 11 in 64, 7 finer (9/10).(Registry values: P1)
