Description

1888 Five Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Only 50 to 60 Known

1888 $5 JD-1, High R.5, PR64 Cameo PCGS. The mintage for 1888 proofs was low as just 95 coins were produced and around half to a third were either melted or entered circulation. Only 50-60 examples are known today of which Cameo and Deep Cameo examples are in the minority as PCGS reports just seven in Cameo and six in Deep Cameo (4/26). This proof is well-struck with vivid detailing of the eagle's feathers, and while somewhat shallow in the hair above, the band the details are still easily perceptible. The coin is free from abrasions with none apparent and only a minor spot before the A in AMERICA serves as a pedigree mark. Finding a finer Cameo example is unlikely as PCGS has seen just a single such piece at PR66, making this a phenomenal Registry example (4/26).
