Description
1896 Liberty Nickel, PR67 Deep Cameo
Virtually Flawless Preservation
1896 5C PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. Proof nickel production dipped
to just 1,862 pieces in 1896, but the striking quality is often
excellent, which makes this date an ideal candidate for type
purposes. This example, however, ranks as the single finest of just
four Deep Cameo representatives at PCGS; NGC has similarly seen
just three Ultra Cameo pieces, also with just one achieving the
PR67 grade level (9/14). Neither service has graded a numerically
finer example, regardless of field-device contrast. This piece showcases frost-white motifs set against deeply mirrored recesses. The strike is bold throughout, and just a trace of light golden color graces the extreme outer peripheries. Surface marks are nonexistent, though a couple small, threadlike strike-throughs are noted, one on the reverse amid the E in CENTS and the smaller one on Liberty's chin. Overall, this is an immensely appealing Deep Cameo proof.(Registry values: P3)
