Description

NGC 1860 PR 64 Cameo. In spite of having a "large" mintage of 112 pieces, the 1860 proof quarter eagle is no more available than issues with much lower mintages. Apparently most proofs were melted and estimates of survivors range from a low of 18-19 pieces to as many as 30. This is one of only 2 pieces to have been so graded by NGC with another 2 in PR 65. There are a few tiny planchet flakes out of the fields and at the bottom of the reverse it appears that the coin was struck through a piece of curled up thread, but there is little to indicate out-of-the-mint defects that would cause the coin to grade PR 64. As stated, the devices are cameoed and overall the coin has outstanding eye appeal.
