    Description

PR64 1861 Quarter Eagle, Ex: Bass
    Very Rare in Proof Format

1861 $2 1/2 PR64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: H.W. Bass Jr. Collection. Every advanced numismatist knows that mintage figures can be deceiving. For example, 90 proof quarter eagles were struck in 1861, but the number of survivors is much smaller. As of (9/12), PCGS has certified just five pieces in all grades. The reason for the unexpected rarity has to do with sales versus mintage. During the 1860s, unsold proofs were melted by the Mint, but the reported mintage remained unchanged. Today, the proof 1861 is rarer than its well-known proof-only 1863 successor, which has a published mintage of just 30 pieces. The reverse has small letters and arrows, though the 2013 Guide Book incorrectly lists the proof issues as Old Reverse.
The present apricot-gold specimen displays obvious contrast between the luminous motifs and mirrored fields, yet it lacks a Cameo designation due to age of the holder. The surfaces are flawless aside from two brief mint-made lint marks on the obverse field near the chin and beneath the hairbun.
Ex: Stanley Kesselman (11/1973); Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part III (Bowers and Merena, 5/2000), lot 200.
