Description
1862 Quarter Eagle, PR63 Cameo
Extremely Rare Proof Issue
1862 $2 1/2 JD-1, High R.6, PR63 Cameo PCGS. A minuscule
mintage of 35 proof quarter eagles were struck in 1862, as the
trauma of the Civil War had the effect of greatly reducing the
proof mintage from 90 coins in 1861. Only 13 to 17 specimens in all
grades are estimated to survive from the original mintage, and much
less with the Cameo designation. The 1862 Liberty Head quarter
eagle proof coins very seldom appear on the coin market. This exceptional example has wonderful orange gold toning throughout along with olive highlights for lovely eye appeal. A few trivial marks are present on both sides that are commensurate with the grade. The strike is full and sharp with all design elements well defined. Reflective fields contrast beautifully with the frosted devices for an aesthetically pleasing presentation. An exceptional and extremely rare Liberty Head quarter eagle proof gold coin. PCGS Population: 2 in 63 Cameo, 1 finer (8/25).
