    Description

NGC 1864 PR 65 Cameo. According to official mint documents, 50 proof quarter eagles were produced in 1864. However, judging from the number extant, it is likely that far fewer were actually distributed. It is entirely possible that the Civil War took precedence in people's minds over coin collecting in 1864, and a fair number of those struck were melted as unsold at year's end. Only 12-16 examples are known today, this piece being tied for second finest certified.
The fields have an unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity and go "black" as the coin is angled slightly. The devices are heavily frosted, and the overall appearance is one of a two-toned cameo. Only the faintest hairlines are evident in the fields, and these we cannot see without a magnifier. A superb quality specimen and, of course, of the highest rarity and importance as an early proof. (NGC ID# 287J, PCGS# 7890)

HA is a traditional auction house, they set up their auctions slightly different from typical domain auctions. This works well, it seems to be a good mix of old age (live bidding in a prestigious hotel) and new age (online bidding).
