Description

1864 Cameo Proof Quarter Eagle

1864 PR 64 Cameo NGC. According to official mint documents, 50 proof quarter eagles were produced in 1864. However, judging from the number extant, it is likely that far fewer were actually distributed. It is entirely possible that the Civil War took precedence in people's minds over coin collecting in 1864, and a fair number of those struck were melted as unsold at year's end. Only 12-16 examples are known today.
The fields have an unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity and go "black" as the coin is angled slightly. The devices are heavily frosted, and the overall appearance is one of a two-toned cameo. Only a few scattered hairlines are evident in the fields, most of these being confined to the obverse. A choice quality specimen and, of course, of the highest rarity and importance as an early proof.
