Description

1867 Quarter Eagle, PR64
Undesignated Contrast, Rare Issue

1867 $2 1/2 PR64 PCGS. The Mint coined 50 proof quarter eagles in 1867, which were distributed in six-piece gold proof sets. Likely fewer than half of the coins survive in all grades. We know of at least five 1867 gold proof sets that were still intact in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as several other individual coins that appeared in auction sales of the same period. In his Proof Encyclopedia, Walter Breen listed 12 individual coins, including a piece in the Smithsonian Institution and another in the ANS, plus others that were "poorly cleaned, nicked or scratched."

PCGS estimates that about 25 pieces are known, which is in rough agreement with the certified population of 26 coins at PCGS and NGC combined that does not include institutional examples (2/18). We believe this issue is even rarer and that the population data is inflated by resubmissions; in the past 25 years, we have handled a proof 1867 quarter eagle on only 10 previous occasions. Although a thorough roster has not yet been compiled, we estimate that fewer than 20 coins are known.

This sharp near-Gem showcases remarkable depth of mirroring in the fields and razor-sharp definition on the frosty devices. Both sides are deep orange-gold in color with an accent of lavender in the centers. Any grade-limiting flaws are too minor to mention on this incredibly appealing and rare 1867 proof quarter eagle.
