Description

1873 Liberty Quarter Eagle, PR62
Closed 3, Only Variety

1873 $2 1/2 Closed 3, JD-1, High R.6, PR62 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint struck a minuscule mintage of 25 proof Liberty quarter eagles in 1873, with all the coins delivered on February 18. A single pair of dies was used to strike the proofs, with a Closed 3 in the date. John Dannreuther estimates no more than 12 to 14 examples survive today in all grades. This attractive PR62 specimen offers sharply detailed design elements, with a partial wire edge on both sides. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces include reflective fields and are lightly marked for the grade. This classic proof gold rarity will be a welcome addition to a fine collection or Registry Set. PCGS Population: 1 in 62, 5 finer (3/26).
