Description

Captivating and Rare 1875 Quarter Eagle, PR65 Cameo

1875 $2 1/2 PR65 Cameo NGC. Produced to the extent of just 20 coins, the proof 1875 Quarter Eagle has an extant population of perhaps 13-14 pieces. While at least one impaired example is known (NGC reports a PR50 coin in its 5/01 Census Report), the present example was obviously well preserved since the time it left the Mint. Hairlines and contact marks are virtually non-existent, although interesting striations (as produced) swirl around in the fields. The only evident pedigree marker is a lintmark (also as produced) on the obverse over and before Liberty's forehead. Beautifully contrasted with bright, glassy fields and a rich overlay of golden-rose color. We have not handled a proof 1875 Quarter Eagle of similar quality in recent memory, and it will probably be several years before the opportunity presents itself again.
