Important 1875 Proof Quarter Eagle

1875 $2 1/2 PR53 NGC. Ex: Genaitis. Extremely rare in any grade, the proof 1875 is "one of the members of the charmed circle of Gold Proofs with original mintages of 20 pieces," as Taglione said. Proofs are easily distinguishable from business strikes (also extremely rare) by the position of the date high in the exergual field and with the tip of the 5 almost touching the bust of Liberty. Perhaps only 12-15 proofs survive in all grades today. This piece shows light friction from handling, but the fields are still deeply mirrored. There are numerous contact marks on each side, but the only ones of any note are a couple of milling marks on the brow of Liberty.
