Gem Proof 1876 Two and a Half
    Considerable Field-Device Contrast

1876 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Childs. The 1876 quarter eagle proof is one of the more frequently seen issues of the 1870s, while still conditionally quite rare in Gem or finer condition. At Heritage we are privileged to offer this Gem PCGS proof along with a Gem Cameo NGC example in the present auction, due to the depth of quality and breadth of issues covered in this fine consignment. The Centennial observance in 1876 undoubtedly caused the Mint to strike off some extra coins, going to a reported mintage of 45 pieces from 20 in the previous and following years.
It is also a near-certainty that some were later melted as unsold.
The present Gem PCGS example is one of two non-Cameos in this grade with none finer. Likely only about half of the mintage survives today, and it has been more than a decade since we offered a coin in this exact grade, an example in our Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2001), lot 8879, which realized a strong $18,975 at the time.
The antique-gold surfaces show a bold strike with considerable undesignated cameo contrast between the fields and devices. Abundant eye appeal prevails throughout both sides, in keeping with the grade, and only a few minor signs of contact seemingly preclude the Premium Gem level.
Ex: Walter H. Childs Collection (Bowers and Merena, 8/1999), lot 609.

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
