    Description

Superb Cameo Proof 1879 Quarter Eagle, Ex: Garrett, Benson

1879 PR 66 Cameo NGC. An extremely rare proof with a mintage of only 30 pieces. From that original production, it is estimated today that between 15 and 18 pieces still survive as recognizable proofs. According to Akers, "Proofs are extremely rare and are less often seen than the more highly regarded Proofs of 1873 and 1875." The cameo surfaces are pristine and display a light yellow-gold and peach color with a couple of faint splashes of rose patina in the fields. Recognizable as the Garrett specimen by the presence of a small planchet void below the A in STATES on the reverse. From the Benson Collection. Population: 1 in 66, only 1 piece is finer (12/98).
Obtained by T. Harrison Garrett from the Philadelphia Mint on September 4, 1879; Garrett II (Bowers and Ruddy, 3/80), lot 772. (NGC ID# 2882, PCGS# 7905)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
