Description

Very Rare Proof 1880 Quarter Eagle--Mintage: 36 Pieces

1880 PR 63 Cameo NGC. A rare, low mintage proof of which only 36 pieces were originally produced. Estimates vary of the number of survivors extant today. Taglione claims that 18-19 pieces may still exist while Breen asserts that as many as 24 proofs may still be in existence. Still, a very elusive date and a coin we have not handled in at least five years. The surfaces have a rich orange-gold color with deeply mirrored fields and a slight cameo contrast on each side. The only mentionable flaw is a long, curved (staple?) scratch from the bottom of the E in STATES on the reverse.
