Description

1883 Quarter Eagle, PR66 Deep Cameo
High Condition Census Example

1883 $2 1/2 JD-1, High R.5, PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Smooth yellow-gold surfaces are illuminated with deep, frosty mirroring. Strike is flawless, with all details fully defined on the hair, star centers, and wing feathers. A couple of short hairlines are present in front of the portrait, but consistent with the Premium Gem grade, distracting marks are nonexistent.

Regardless of proof or circulation strike status, two die pairs of 1883 quarter eagles are known and are noted in Mint documents. Breen posited that one was proof-only and the other was used for both formats. However, John Dannreuther believes that the supposed proof examples of the latter die marriage are actually prooflike early circulation strikes, thus following the pattern of the surrounding dates of a single proof die marriage that was used exclusively for this format.

After hovering in the 30 to 50 range for two decades, proof quarter eagle production started increasing in 1882, and further expanded to 82 examples in 1883. However, only about a third of certifications of this date earned the Deep or Ultra Cameo designation, with 11 at PCGS and 7 at NGC (3/25). Among these, the only finer examples are one PR66+ PCGS, and two PR67 NGC examples, making the present offering among the cream of the crop.
