Description

1883 PR 62 Obverse Lightly Cleaned. Only 82 proof quarter eagles were struck in this year, and of that number it has been estimated that 28 to 32 pieces exist today in all grades. Many prooflike business strikes are known and in the past they have been confused with proofs, but this is unquestionably a proof striking. The fields are deeply mirrored and the rims are even and squared off. There is, however, a bit of striking weakness noted on the eagle's left leg. The obverse shows evidence of having been cleaned at one time, but the coin has since acquired a rich reddish patina that covers over most of the evidence.
