Description

1884 Quarter Eagle, PR64 Cameo
Well Mirrored and CAC Approved

1884 $2 1/2 JD-1, High R.5, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Rich yellow-gold coloration covers fields that contain substantial mirroring. Some slight polish on the portrait precludes the Deep Cameo designation. Razor-sharp definition permeates both sides, and a few microscopic ticks on either side of the mouth are the only abrasions of note. The 1884 proof quarter eagle is of equal rarity to the preceding 1883 issue despite a mintage of nine fewer proofs (73 vs. 82). Dannreuther suggests that the sales of full proof sets is most directly analogous to the current-day surviving population, as collectors wealthy enough to afford entire proof sets could also weather economic downturns without spending proof pieces. Also unlike 1883, Cameo coins outnumber Deep Cameo proofs, with 10 and 2 respective certifications for 1884, compared to 11 and 15 for 1883. Few numerically finer Cameo coins exist as well, making the present offering one of the finest extant survivors. PCGS Population: 2 in 64 Cameo, 7 finer (3/26). CAC: 2 in 64, 4 finer (3/26).
