Description

Low Mintage 1884 Two and a Half, PR64

1884 $2 1/2 PR64 PCGS. CAC. The 1884 proof quarter eagle is similar to the quarter and half dollar of this date in that each has a low production of business strikes as well as proof strikings. Also, in each case first-strike circulation coins have been confused with actual proofs in the past. Only 73 proof two and a halves were struck, and it is estimated that today no more than 30 to 40 pieces are known in all grades. This is a lovely example that exhibits the cameo effect seen on many proofs from this year. The surfaces have a rich reddish color, and the fields are extraordinarily deep in their reflectivity. By way of future identification, there are two alloy spots, that appear like smudges, in the left obverse field and the left reverse field. Population: 5 in 64, 5 finer (10/09).(Registry values: P3)
