Description

1886 Quarter Eagle, PR65 Ultra Cameo
Exceptional Strike and Surface Quality

1886 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.5, PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Red-gold and orange-gold surfaces are sharply contrasted with brilliant, mirrored fields. Exquisite striking quality excludes no details from the collector's view. A couple of thin hairlines protruding from the I in AMERICA seek to identify this example.

The Mint produced 88 proofs this year, with 25 sets delivered on February 1 and 16 on March 30, along with individual coin deliveries of 10 on June 12, 13 in September, and 24 on December 31. All of these were made from a single die marriage, which is distinct from the sole circulation strike pairing from the position of the 6 in the date. On proofs, the 6 is equidistantly spaced between the bust and dentils, where on circulation strikes, it is twice as close to the latter.
