Description

1887 Quarter Eagle, PR64+ Cameo
CAC, Finest Cameo Example

1887 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.5, PR64+ Cameo PCGS. CAC. The mintage of proof quarter eagles surpassed 100 pieces for the first time in 27 years in 1887 with 122 proofs struck, yet less than half are estimated to survive. The treasury department diluted the initial value of the proofs by producing unneeded circulation issues, just enough to prevent dealers from making a profit from the immediate rarity.
This coin displays bold olive-gold luster with deepening patina predominantly on the reverse's fields. The piece is largely free from any obfuscating markings, though a thin as-struck roller mark runs straight from Liberty's eyelids through a lock of hair that can only be observed via loupe. This piece represents both the finest Cameo attributed example seen by PCGS as well as the sole Plus attributed piece, further bolstered by a CAC endorsement. PCGS Population: 3 in 64 (1 in 64+) Cameo, 0 finer (3/26).
