Description

Desirable 1887 PR 64 PCGS

1887 PR 64 PCGS. A magnificent example of this scarce proof issue. The fields reflect the orange-peel texture peculiar to gold proofs of the era. Examination reveals some faint hairlines on Liberty's cheek, and this piece is identifiable by a minor spot below and touching the first star. A total of 122 proofs were struck this year, and few of these could come close to the quality of this example. In fact, The PCGS Population Report notes that only 10 have been so graded with only 4 coins graded higher (4/97).
