Description

1889 Quarter Eagle, PR64+ CAC
Very Rare Issue, Exceptional Quality

1889 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.6, PR64+ NGC. CAC. The 1889 Liberty Head quarter eagle proof has a relatively small mintage of only 48 coins, and survival estimates are about 30 coins in all grades. David Akers had seen fewer proofs of 1889 than any other quarter eagle after 1880, attesting to the rarity of this issue. Very few have been offered on the coin market in recent years.

This is an exceptional specimen of the 1889 proof quarter eagle, with a full strike and crisp details of the Liberty Head design features. Rich yellow gold and olive hues blanket the immaculate surfaces, with only a few very small marks visible under magnification. Satiny luster of the devices contrasts nicely with the reflective field surfaces, enhancing the beautiful eye appeal. This superb representative has been awarded CAC approval for quality. NGC Census: 1 in 64 (1 in 64+), 0 finer (8/25). CAC: 1 in 64, 1 finer (8/25).
