    Description

    1890 Quarter Eagle, PR65
Bold Cameo Contrast, Gold CAC Label

1890 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. Gold CAC. The Mint produced 93 proof gold dollars in 1890, though as few as 50 to 60 examples survive for modern-day collectors. Extant examples span a wide grade range from PR55 to PR68, but those in the Gem or finer category are in the distinct minority. Housed in an old green label holder, this PR65 coin is not designation as a Cameo, though the field-motif contrast is unmistakable beneath the veil of warm apricot-gold patina. The strike is razor-sharp throughout, and the fields displays profound depth of mirroring. The proof gold specialist will find it challenging to locate a visually finer piece. Population: 7 in 65, 3 finer (8/14).
