Eye-Appealing PR66 Cameo
1890 Quarter Eagle, Excellent Type Coin

1890 $2 1/2 PR66 Cameo NGC. CAC. This Premium Gem Cameo proof 1890 quarter eagle is an extremely eye-appealing coin, despite any numerical grade or Cameo/Ultra Cameo designations. The proof mintage of 93 pieces saw a complement of only 8,720 circulation strikes, making both rare today. But attrition took less of a toll than on earlier issues, and Garrett and Guth estimate that "more than 50" proofs survive today. The Liberty Head gold coinage in proof format is stunningly beautiful, and many collectors prefer it to the problematic matte or Roman finish proof formats of the Indian Head proofs that followed.
The deeply frosted devices contrast boldly against brilliantly mirrored fields on this pristine yellow-gold Premium Gem, a coin seemingly deserving of the Ultra Cameo designation. A needle-sharp strike completes the strong eye appeal, while a tiny dot of color under Liberty's eye provides a pedigree marker. Census: 2 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer (8/12). The population report at NGC also lists more than a dozen Ultra Cameo examples in PR66, PR67, and even PR68.
