    Description

    Exquisite Gem Proof 1890 Two-and-a-Half

1890 $2 1/2 PR 65 PCGS. Fewer than half of the 93 proof quarter eagles that the Philadelphia Mint produced in 1890 survive for the benefit of today's collectors. The coins fall between the PR 58 and PR 67 grade levels, although Gem and finer coins are elusive. A radiant specimen, the coin that we offer here shows deep fields that swallow light like a black hole. The devices are heavily frosted and display rich, orange-gold color. With sharply struck design elements and mark-free surfaces, this coin combines desirable technical quality with the undeniable rarity and popularity of proof gold coinage. Population: 10 in 65, only 3 finer (12/99). (NGC ID# 288D, PCGS# 7916)
