Description

1892 Two and a Half, PR66 Ultra Cameo
Only 45 to 55 Pieces Estimated Extant

1892 $2 1/2 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. JD-1, R.5. The 1892 proof quarter eagle has a mintage of 105 pieces, of which NGC and PCGS combined have certified 98 in all grades and degree of contrast, with only 33 of those assigned the Ultra/Deep Cameo designation (11/21). In the constant quest for an ever higher grade, Plus designation, and crossover there are undoubtedly a high number of resubmissions in those total numbers. John Dannreuther places the actual number of surviving proofs in the range of 45 to 55 pieces; so, accepting his estimate (and we do) that means 50% of the submissions are duplicates. The point of which is to be careful with what population data appears to state.

A breathtaking gold-on-black appearance greets the viewer of the gorgeous Premium Gem example being offered here. The frosted design elements have benefited from an attentive strike, leaving no areas with even the slightest hint of weakness. Close scrutiny reveals no mentionable imperfections on impeccably preserved surfaces. Only some as-made die polish lines traverse the fields. Census: 6 in 66 Ultra Cameo (1 in 66+), 6 finer (11/21).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 11/2007), lot 1916.
