Description

1893 Quarter Eagle, PR67+ Ultra Cameo
Exquisite Abrasion-Free Example

1893 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.5, PR67+ Ultra Cameo NGC. Shimmering yellow-gold surfaces contrast sharply with inky black fields and contain only slight orange peeling on the obverse. As is expected from a Superb Gem Proof, strike is exquisite and abrasions are non-existent.

By the 1890s, there were "mega-collectors" on the scene who saved many examples of proof coinage. Virgil Brand bought multiple examples from the Mint and also procured additional proofs on the aftermarket. This likely contributed to the increase in surviving Cameo Proof quarter eagles this year. The overall high quality of this issue makes it an excellent candidate for the type collector who wants a top-notch example of a proof gold coin - the caviar of American coinage. Census: 9 in 67 Ultra Cameo (1 in 67+, 2 in 67+ ), 3 finer (5/25).
