1894 Proof Quarter Eagle, Unc Details
    Only 122 Pieces Struck

1894 $2 1/2 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Proof Genuine. Unc Details. The 1894 proof Liberty quarter eagle claims a mintage of 122 pieces, up slightly from the previous year but smaller than any issue of the type after 1896. Approximately 50-70 examples survive today in all grades, with a surprising number of mishandled specimens in that total. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth estimate 25% of the coins seen at auction are impaired to some degree.

The present coin has been certified as "Altered Surfaces" by PCGS, possibly because of some slight roughness in the reverse field near the eagle's left (facing) leg. The design elements are sharply detailed and the fields are deeply mirrored, providing bold, if unacknowledged, cameo contrast. A few minor hairlines are evident, but eye appeal is quite strong.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 288H, PCGS# 7920)
