    1894 Quarter Eagle, PR67 Deep Cameo
    Tied for Finest at PCGS
    Only 122 Proofs Struck

    1894 $2 1/2 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Proof production of quarter eagles began a steady ascent starting in the 1880s, reaching 122 proofs in 1894. Despite what may be considered a higher proof mintage (all things being relative), only 4,000 circulation strikes were produced in that year. Thus, the 1894 is one of the lowest total-mintage dates in the series. Garrett and Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins (2006) estimates 50 to 70 representatives survive in all grades, and many of them show signs of circulation. Only a small fraction of the surviving population are certified in this impressive grade with a Deep Cameo designation. In fact, there are only two PR67 Deep Cameo representatives at PCGS with none finer (2/15).

    Uninhibited reflectivity in the fields combines with a thick layer of mint frost over the devices to generate outstanding Deep Cameo contrast throughout this Superb Gem proof quarter eagle. Orange-gold color prevails over each side. The technical quality of this piece is matched by its aesthetic merit.
