Description

1896 Quarter Eagle, PR65 Deep Cameo
One of the Best-Produced
Late 19th Century Gold Issues

1896 $2 1/2 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. JD-1, High R.4. Like many gold and silver proofs from the mid-to-late 1890s, this 1896 Gem Deep Cameo quarter eagle displays mesmerizing deeply mirrored fields accompanied by richly frosted raised devices for unsurpassed eye appeal. A larger than normal proof mintage of 132 pieces reflects the public's preference for the high-contrast from the late 19th century that delighted collectors then and now. The glass-smooth left obverse fields are immaculate save for a tiny alloy spot between the outer point of star 2 and the rim, a worthwhile pedigree marker. Housed in a previous generation PCGS holder with a light-blue label, this spectacular proof shows no tangible post-mint imperfections and the orange-gold eye appeal rivals that of any 1896 quarter eagle proof we have handled in recent memory. Population: 7 in 65 Deep Cameo, 18 finer (4/24).(Registry values: P2)
