Description
Gem Proof 1896 Quarter Eagle
Bold, Unacknowledged Contrast
1896 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. If recertified, this specimen is a
no-brainer for a Cameo designation; the only reason it is not
labeled Cameo is because it was certified in the green-label days
of PCGS. The contrast between frosted butter-yellow devices and
bold gold-black mirrors is remarkable, and only a few small milky
spots are present on each side. Overall preservation is excellent,
as expected of a Gem proof. One of just a few dozen specimens
extant from a proof mintage of 132 pieces, this is a high-appeal
quarter eagle that represents its late 19th century issue
well.(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 288K, PCGS# 7922, GSID# 8567)
