1897 Quarter Eagle, PR68★ Ultra Cameo
Exceptional Quality and Eye Appeal
Rare Issue, Only One Graded Higher

1897 $2 1/2 JD-1, High R.4, PR68★ Ultra Cameo NGC. Ex: Pittman. The 1897 Liberty Head quarter eagle proof mintage was a minuscule 136 coins, of which 70 to 80 have been estimated to survive in all grades by John Dannreuther, author of the standard reference United States Proof Coins Volume IV: Gold (2018). A single set of working dies with fields polished to mirrored surfaces were used for the 1897 proof strikes. Only a small percentage of coins have been graded with Ultra Cameo reflectivity, and NGC has graded just one numerically finer coin than this stellar example.

The Philadelphia Mint introduced a hydraulic coining press for proof usage in 1894 or shortly after, which struck proof coinage of high quality, having deeply reflective fields contrasting with frosted devices for a beautiful cameo effect. This exceptional representative embraces those superb qualities, with highly reflective fields framing nicely frosted devices, giving wonderful eye appeal. Rich yellow-gold surfaces are close to perfection. NGC Census: 6 in 68 Ultra Cameo (3 in 68 ), 1 finer (8/25).
