1900 Quarter Eagle
Deep Cameo Superb Gem Proof

1900 $2 1/2 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. The period from 1900 to 1902 is both a high-water mark and a time of transition for the proof Liberty quarter eagles. After close to a decade of mintages over 100 pieces, the denomination recorded production of 205 pieces in 1900. That year and the 1901 are the most popular "type coins" for the proof series; not only do they enjoy the highest recorded outputs for proof Liberty quarter eagles, they are also the last to have been struck with Mint techniques that favor the frosty devices that combine with mirror fields for the cameo effect popular with today's collectors.

Garrett and Guth suggest that "more than 100" proof 1900 quarter eagles are extant in all grades and that there are "many in superb condition." Coins that have Superb Gem preservation and Deep Cameo contrast remain condition rarities, however, and the number of certification events is skewed by resubmissions. NGC has graded more than two dozen Ultra Cameo coins as PR67 or better, while the PCGS tallies for Deep Cameo coins are simpler: 5 in 67, 1 in 67+, and 1 finer (3/13).

Unsurprisingly for a gold proof of its year, this Superb Gem specimen has magnificent field-devices contrast, glassy yellow-gold in the fields with pale frost draping the sharply struck central devices. The preservation is as magnificent as the grade would imply, and the green CAC label adds another layer of confirmation for its noteworthy status. An all-around inspiring coin.(Registry values: P1)
