1901 Quarter Eagle, PR69 Deep Cameo
Tied for Series-Finest Liberty Head Proof
Breathtaking Color and Quality

1901 $2 1/2 JD-1, Low R.4, PR69 Deep Cameo PCGS. Among all the proof Liberty quarter eagles struck since the introduction of the Liberty Head type in 1840, only three examples have achieved the near-ultimate PR69 Deep Cameo grade from PCGS and one PR69 Ultra Cameo exists on the NGC Census. These few coins represent the ultimate examples of the Liberty Head type. Three of the top proof coins are 1901 quarter eagles, and the other PR69 Deep Cameo is an 1899 quarter eagle certified by PCGS. More 1901 proof quarter eagles were minted than those of any other date in the Liberty series. The production totaled 223 coins during a transitional year for the Mint. John Dannreuther suggests 130 to 170 proofs survive from that generous mintage. The second Mint building was vacated and the third Mint structure occupied in October 1901. National Archives records researched by Roger Burdette indicate that 88% of 1901 proof quarter eagles were coined in the first three quarters of the year at the second Mint, and 12% were coined in the final quarter at the third Mint facility. 1901 is the final proof year that consistently provides high quality proofs with significant contrast between the raised motifs and the surrounding fields. This amazing Superb Gem Deep Cameo exhibits every detail struck to its sharpest, with deeply mirrored and highly brilliant orange-gold surfaces, showing marked contrast between the vibrantly mirrored fields and richly frosted devices. A delight for the connoisseur, this piece is essentially perfect and presents majestic beauty. In addition, this amazing 1901 proof serves as the Dannreuther proof gold reference plate coin. PCGS Population: 2 in 69 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (7/25).
